The FIS Speed Ski World Cup season 2016/17 concluded last weekend in Grandvalira (AND) with exciting competitions.

While it was a clear conclusion on the ladies’ side, the fight for the men’s overall title lasted until the very last competition.

Greggio takes it all

26-year old Valentina Greggio (ITA) clearly dominated the ladies’ events by winning the World Championship title and every World Cup event of the season. Her closest opponents this season were Britta Backlund (SWE) and Celia Martinez (FRA) who finished tied in second place in the overall standings.

Montes wins tight battle

The men’s competition was a different scenario which saw a different winner at each World Cup event until the final race.

Unlike in previous years when the World Cup was dominated by the Italian Origone brothers, it was a battle between five athletes this year. In the end, World Champion Bastien Montes from the French Pyrenees, narrowly won over his contenders with a fifth place finish in the final race.

The top four in the overall standings all finished within 25 points of each other with last year’s winner Simone Origone (ITA) taking second and Klaus Schrottshammer (AUT) taking third place, followed by Manuel Kramer (AUT) in fourth positon.

Meanwhile, the Nations Cup came down to the two Speed Skiing powerhouses of France and Sweden who also have the largest teams on the circuit. The two countries shared the title for the best nation this season. Overall, 20 nations were represented on the 2016/17 World Cup.
