Seefeld 2019 gives spring update

The Coordination Group for the Seefeld 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships met directly following the Lahti 2017 debrief for its semi-annual meeting to review preparations for the Championships.

Members of the Austrian Ski Federation and its Local Organising Committee, FIS and Infront Sports and Media met for the spring meeting after a busy winter in Seefeld, which included the hosting of the Nordic Combined Triple.

The major updates presented by the Seefeld 2019 team included the upgrades and improvements within the sport and venue infrastructure, in addition to increasing its manpower and expertise in the areas of medical services, accommodation and transportation.

The Organisers have shown their capacity for many years hosting several top-level events, including the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games and the FIS World Cup events both in Innsbruck (Ski Jumping Four Hills Tournament) and Seefeld (Nordic Combined Triple).

Werner Friesser, Mayor of Seefeld, who is also specifically responsible for sport in the Local Organising Committee, discussed the continued development of the sports venues. With the snow melted, the construction crews are hard at work again as the entire sport venue is abuzz with activity, including construction of bridges and tunnels and widening the finish area in addition to upgrading the normal jumping hill.

Additionally, the re-construction of the train station, which is located in downtown Seefeld and only a short walk to the competition venue, will be a critical element of the transportation plan is well underway.

The Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined competitions on the large hill will take place on the Bergisel in Innsbruck and a number of improvements are in the final stages of planning. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will take place from 20th February – 3rd March 2019, with the final competition planned traditionally as the men’s 50km Cross-Country race.

The next Coordination Group meeting will take place in the autumn and will be based in Innsbruck, home to the Austrian Ski Federation to give the members a chance to visit the Ski Jumping venue and interact with the Innsbruck section of the Local Organising Committee.
