The return to Klingenthal

After the cancelled events of the year 2016, the Nordic Combined World Cup now finally returns to the German venue of Klingenthal. While the weekend might already bring a decision in the World Cup standings 2017/18 (Akito Watabe currently leads with 178 points), fans of the German team will surely get their money’s worth.

Not only is it the first time that the country can see its Olympic heroes in competition since their gold medal sweep in PyeongChang, but Klingenthal has also been a good place for the German athletes so far: in 2013, Eric Frenzel celebrated two victories and the team swept the podium in the Penalty Race and the local hero and legend of the sport also celebrated his very first World Cup victory here in 2008.

In the overall standings, Fabian Rießle is slowly but surely challenging Norway’s Jan Schmid for the second place with 206 points separating both athletes at the moments and four events to go. With two Individual Gundersen events on schedule and Rießle’s shape on the rise, everything is possible for the 27-year-old.

The competitions in Klingenthal promise to be action-filled, not only with a big jumping hill that favours strong jumpers but also an unusual track full of quick twists and turns, fast corners and small bumps and jumps. With big stakes to win and lose for some athletes, the weekend promises everything that a Nordic Combined fan could ask for.
