Cross-country superstar Marit Bjoergen retires

It’s the end of an era in Cross Country Skiing and the entire winter sports world. Marit Bjoergen (NOR), the most decorated Winter Olympian with 15 medals, announced her retirement last weekend.

"This process has been going on during the last year, and I have known throughout the season that enough is enough," she wrote in an official press release published on the Norwegian Ski Association website

During her long and successful career, Bjoergen, who grew up on a farm outside Trondheim, had amazing success, winning 114 individual FIS World Cups, claiming 184 World Cup podiums, collecting 18 gold medals and 26 in total at FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and a whopping 15 medals, out of which eight were gold, at the Olympic Winter Games.

Bjoergen capped her career at PyeongChang 2018 with five medals, including two golds, to break countryman biathlete, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen’s record for most Winter Olympic medals. She also tied Bjoerndalen and cross-country star Bjoern Daehlie for the Winter Games gold medal record of eight.

"I'm proud of what I've achieved in my career, but I've also been privileged to have been able to win top-level sports. I am very much thankful to amazing team friends, teammates, coaches, medical team, service team, managers and the whole support crew that have been around me. You have a great deal of credit for my results," Bjoergen said in her release.

FIS wishes Marit all the best in her future endeavours and thanks her for all the great memories during her incredible career.
