Shiffrin and Ligety nominated for ESPY Awards
Mikaela Shiffrin and Ted Ligety may soon have some additional hardware to commemorate their Olympic and World Cup exploits of the past winter as the two US skiers have been nominated for the ESPY Awards.

Presented by ESPN, the ESPY Awards annually honor the world’s top professional and amateur athletes for their accomplishments during that season or year. Voted on by the fans, the 2014 ESPYs are scheduled for July 16.

Shiffrin has been nominated for both Best Female Athlete and Best U.S. Female Olympian accolades, while teammate Ted Ligety is also in the running for the Best Male U.S. Olympian ESPY.

“My first thought was ‘Yikes’,” Shiffrin wrote on her Facebook page. “My second thought was that I better find a dress. There are a lot of great athletes on this list so think carefully before you press the button.”

Shiffrin’s competition for Best Female Athlete includes pro basketball player Maya Moore, mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey and University of Connecticut basketball star Breanna Stewart. Her Best U.S. Olympian counterparts include snowboarder Jamie Anderson, freestyle skier Maddie Bowman and figure skater Meryl Davis.

Ligety’s competition for the Best Male U.S. Olympian award include halfpipe skier David Wise, freestyle skier Joss Christensen and snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg.

“3 Park City local ESPY nominees for Best Olympian. Make sure one of us wins...preferably me,” Ligety encouraged his fans to vote on his Facebook page.
