Stacked halfpipe competition to kick off big week in Park City
The biggest week of the 2014/15 FIS Freestyle season gets started with halfpipe competition coming from Utah's Park City resort, with qualifiers taking place on Wednesday followed by finals on Friday.
Wednesday's qualifiers will see an absolute who's-who of the halfpipe world on hand to duke it out for one of the 10 men's and six ladies' spots available for Friday's finals.
Lead by David Wise (USA) and Maddie Bowman (USA), all six of the Sochi 2014 halfpipe podium athletes will be in the hunt at Park City, as well as 2015 world champion Kyle Smaine (USA) and the rest of the men's Kreischberg 2015 podium, Kreischberg ladies' silver medallist Cassie Sharpe (CAN), and a list of X-Games, Dew Tour, Grand Prix, World Cup, and world championships podium winners too deep to list off.
While Park City's typically pristine pipe is looking primed and ready for competition, weather could become a factor later in the week, as snow showers are forecast to move into the Park City area on Thursday and Friday. With training taking place under perfect bluebird skies leading up to Wednesday's qualifiers, a rider's ability to adapt to the conditions could become a factor come finals' time.
With halfpipe and slopestyle competitions in Park City, moguls and dual moguls events in Tazawako, Japan, and the aerials World Cup finals coming up from Minsk, Belarus, the coming days will be a bonanza for fans of freestyle skiing. Stay tuned to our channels for all the action.
