90th Lahti Ski Games to get underway this weekend
The new world champions are back on track just one week after the World Championships in Falun, when Lahti hosts eight FIS World Cup events in Ski Jumping, Cross-Country and Nordic Combined from 6th -8th March 2015.
Fans of Cross-Country Skiing will see more action on tracks than ever before. On Saturday, new World Champions in sprint, Marit Björgen (NOR) and Petter Northug (NOR), will meet tough competition – this time in free technique. On Sunday, the home crowd will have high expectations for the Finnish athletes in the 10 km (ladies) and 15 km (men) in classical technique on a demanding course.
Good snow conditions
Despite recent warm weather, all courses are in good condition. "We can use the tracks as planed, the snow coverage is thick and wide enough. The stadium is in a good shape as well", chief of course Raiko Pousi said.
Side Events
The Lahti Ski Games offer a lot of activities for families and fans beyond the competitions. SnowKids funpark, which includes a small ski jumping hill and sledding, rail park for snowboarders, and family park in the Fair Hall will be the places for the families during the weekend.
A huge festival tent just beside the spectators’ area will be crowded when After Ski starts. Finland’s biggest music stars will jump be on stage from Friday to Sunday.
Official WCS host
The FIS flag was handed over to the Lahti2017 delegates at the end of the World Championships in Falun. The flag will be raised on Saturday between the rounds of the Ski Jumping Team Event. After the event, fireworks will take place.
