Lahti 2017 is ready to rise to the challenge
Following the Falun 2015 debrief, Lahti 2017 hosted the semi-annual Coordination Group meeting for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, where they reported their progress over the last six months and presented the plans moving forward.

With all eyes now on Lahti 2017, the team reported many milestones during the winter season, most notably the Lahti team has grown significantly with several full-time staff members hired to fill key roles, in addition to a Steering Group being formed together with the City of Lahti to oversee all constructions and venue-related elements of the Championships.

“When the FIS flag was handed over in Falun, it was a big moment for our team,” said Lahti 2017 General Director Janne Leskinen. “It is time to really dig in and go full steam ahead. We are excited and ready for the next two years of preparations.”

The meeting was held at Finland’s Vierumaki Institute, which serves as the Training Centre for many Finnish National Teams in different sports. Vierumaki will also be the official Athlete Village for the Lahti 2017 World Championships. To open the meetings, representatives from FIS, EBU and Tridem Sports were treated to a full tour of the vast accommodation, sporting and relaxation facilities that Vierumaki will provide to the teams.

The Lahti 2017 team used the occasion of the 90th Lahti Games in March to test several operational aspects. Several infrastructure changes that are underway and others in the planning phase were also presented that will maximise the efficiency of the existing venues and leave a legacy for future editions of the Games. Lahti 2017 is working closely with the Finnish Government to fully incorporate Finland’s 100-year anniversary as an independent nation into the World Championships

The Coordination Group also reviewed the preliminary competition schedule and the dates for the FIS World Cup in the three Nordic disciplines that will serve as the official Test Event, which will be 19th-21st February 2016.

In addition the official website www.lahti2017.fi was officially launched and includes many details for people to get involved with the World Championships. Fans can also follow the official Facebook page: Lahti2017 in addition to using the hashtag #lahti2017 to get engaged with the Championships.

“These meetings were the first with Lahti next in line to host the World Championships and it was clear that energy level and focus has increased,” said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. “With the excitement comes pressure and a lot of work, but Lahti has a dedicated team that is ready to rise to the challenges.”
