All eyes turn to St. Moritz 2017
Following the Vail/Beaver Creek 2015 debrief, St. Moritz 2017 hosted the semi-annual Coordination Commission meeting for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, where they reported their progress during the last winter season and plans for the short and long term.

With all eyes now on St. Moritz 2017, the team reported many milestones during the winter season, most notably the team continues to grow as several key positions have been filled on the Oganising Committee. In addition, construction is underway in the finish area and on the courses, while plans for venues in St. Moritz town, including the locations for the media centre and medals plaza, are taking shape.

A special moment was shared on Thursday evening when the FIS flag, which was handed over from Vail to St. Mortiz during the closing ceremony in February, was officially hoisted outside of the Town Hall in St. Moritz. FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis had the honour of addressing the more than 100 people gathered for the ceremony.

“I can’t think of a better opportunity and more fitting symbol than raising the flag during this Coordination meeting in the presence of the three Organising Committees of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2015, 2017 and 2019,” said Lewis. “It is a concrete symbol that the World Championships in St. Moritz are just around the corner. We are excited and ready for the next two years of working with St. Moritz.”

Representatives from FIS, EBU and Tridem Sports undertook a full tour of the various facilities that will be used in 2017, including the finish area, medals plaza and media centres.

St, Moritz 2017 is now turning its attention to details around the slope, including course refinements, working closely with the host broadcaster Swiss television on camera positions and the International Broadcast Centre adjacent to the finish area, as well as creating plans for the Medal Plaza in St. Moritz town.

The 2017 Organising Committee is preparing intensively for the biggest test of its organisation yet, that will come when the resort hosts the FIS Alpine World Cup Finals in March 2016, which will include the men’s and ladies’ competing in all Alpine events.

St. Moritz’s official website www.stmoritz2017.ch is fully operation and provides information for potential volunteers, in addition to emerging details for international spectators, visitors and fans. The official Facebook page already has nearly 3,000 likes. In addition people are encouraged to use the hashtag #stmoritz2017 to get engaged with the Championships.

“After the Vail 2015 debrief we have a new level of motivation,” said St. Moritz Organising Committee President Hugo Wetzel. “We have excellent support from the community and our summer planning is coming along nicely. Our next major target will be the World Cup Finals next March, but we have many details to put in place to be ready for that key test event.”
