The FIS Inspection Group took the opportunity to undertake a pre-inspection on site in Cortina d’Ampezzo (ITA), last Thursday and Friday, as the sole applicant bidding to host the 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
Present at the visit were several representatives from the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), the Local Bid Committee, the Marketing and Media Rights holder Infront Sports & Media, and professionals from FIS including men’s Race Director Markus Waldner and ladies’ Race Director Atle Skaardal under the coordination of FIS Secretary General, Sarah Lewis.
On Thursday, the group carried out a walking tour of the proposed venues in the town of Cortina, followed by a visit to the finish area of the courses. Friday, the Race Directors and Cortina sport personnel returned to the hill, while the rest of the group had an in-depth meeting to discuss the potential plans for the 2021 World Championships.
“While 2021 still seems like it is a long way off, this was an important and fruitful meeting to hold right now,” said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. “Together with key representatives from FISI and the local Cortina team, it has been possible to address both the exciting opportunities but also the challenges at this early stage.”
The next step for the Cortina Bid Committee will be a formal presentation of their concept at the upcoming Technical Meetings in Zurich (SUI) on 30th September. The election for all of the 2021 FIS World Championship hosts by the FIS Council will be held at the 50th FIS Congress this June in Cancun (MEX).
