Two months after the successful FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti (FIN) closed, the Lahti 2017 Organising Committee presented the outcome of the event at the official debrief in Seefeld (AUT) on 11th May.
A delegation of five representatives, led by CEO Janne Leskinen, presented the report from Lahti 2017, which was held at the site of the next upcoming Championships, Seefeld (AUT).
Representatives from Seefeld 2019 and Oberstdorf 2021 were on hand together with the marketing rights holders from Lahti 2017: EBU with Tridem, host broadcaster YLE, and for Seefeld 2019: Infront Sports and Media, as well as representatives from FIS.
"Looking back at Lahti 2017 during the debrief it was striking how much this Organising Committee accomplished and what an excellent legacy they have left for the future World Cup and other events in Lahti and for Finnish Nordic skiing as such. They had a clear plan and followed it through in every aspect," commented FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.
The lessons during the session included how Lahti 2017 created a new event experience concept to inject innovative elements into one of the most experienced and traditional Nordic Skiing venues and organisations. Also of great interest was the communications and marketing concept to reach out to new audiences, alongside combining the concept with the 100 Year anniversary of Finland. Also presented were the final learnings from every aspect of the logistics and services such as transportation, accommodation, accreditation, technology, volunteers and more.
The Lahti 2017 team successfully used the Championships as a key opportunity to upgrade their venue and facilities, including renewing the ski jumping hills, upgrading the cross-country tracks and snow-making and renovating parts of tje stadium building, which will serve sport as well as the community for many years to come.
The Seefeld 2019 and Oberstdorf 2021 teams used the opportunity to learn from the experiences of the Lahti group and will continue to use the best practices and advice presented when looking ahead to prepare their respective FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
