FIS and EBU review season and discuss future
Representatives of the European Broadcasting Union, the TV rights holder for the FIS Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships 2015-17, and FIS met on 13th May for a workshop at the FIS Headquarters in Oberhofen (SUI).

The in-depth exchange focused on a review of the past 2012/13 season and looked into the future with the focus on developing new and creative ways of making ski sport even more exciting for the fans and TV viewers. This included a close examination of future broadband technologies which reach beyond traditional TV coverage.

One of the key innovations of the 2012/13 season was the introduction of extended audio commentary operations for the 2013 FIS Alpine and Nordic World Ski Championships in Schladming (AUT) and Val di Fiemme (ITA). For the first time, an online multi-language sound-byte platform provided radio and writing journalists with direct access to interviews from the heart of the events. With 6’000 users in Schladming, the service generated more traffic than a similar service at the Olympic Games in London 2012.

Ingolfur Hannesson, Head of Winter Sports for the EBU concluded: “During the 2013 World Championships in Schladming and Val di Fiemme, FIS and EBU jointly progressed into various new directions with regard to the exploitation of the Media Rights. A perfect example was the audio platform provided for radio stations and other interested parties. Now, we wish to take this to another level in particular in connection with the 2015 FIS World Ski Championships in Vail/Beaver Creek and Falun by further exploring options with regard to broadband distribution, second screens, hybrid radio, etc.” He added: “The meeting in Oberhofen was just a start of a process, where the EBU expertise on various editorial and technical levels can be maximised to the benefit of FIS and its various disciplines."
