Leadership changes in Canadian skiing
One of Canada’s most accomplished and respected sport leaders, Peter Judge, has been named the new director of winter sport for Own the Podium (OTP), a not-for-profit organisation designed to help Canadian athletes win more international medals.

The current chief executive officer of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association and Honorary Member of the FIS Freestyle Skiing Committee will transition into his new position following the 2014 Olympic Winter Games so as not to disrupt the preparations for Sochi. Judge will succeed Ken Read, member of the Canadian Alpine Skiing Team from 1974 to 1983, and Chair of both the FIS Coordination Group and the Alpine Sub-Committee for Youth and Children’s Questions. Read took on the position of direct of winter sport for OTP in 2010 after the Games in Vancouver.

Judge, who has represented Canada at seven Olympic Winter Games as a coach and/or team leader, brings four decades of experience in a variety of roles in sport around the world. A medal-winning athlete and coach with the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team, he has guided countless Canadian Freestyle Skiing athletes to medals.

Meanwhile, Alpine Canada President and CEO Max Gartner has announced that he will step down from his role once a successor can be found to lead the Canadian governing body for alpine, para-alpine and ski cross racing.

Gartner has worked for Alpine Canada in various coaching and management positions since 1982 and was appointed President in the autumn of 2010. The 54-year-old originally planned to step down when his contract expires after the 2014 Games in Sochi, but as part of his succession planning he decided to tender his resignation early in order to ensure the new President and CEO is in place for the 2013/14 season.
