70 years of Skiing in Chile
The Chilean Ski Association celebrated its 70th anniversary on 24th June 2013.

Founded in 1943, the Chilean Ski Association was initially focused on Alpine Skiing but has grown to encompass other disciplines including Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard after which it changed its name to Chilean Ski and Snowboard Federation in 2001.

Since its creation, Chile has participated in all Olympic Winter Games and World Championships with one of the highlights being the organisation of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Portillo in 1966. This was also where the famous Jean-Claude Killy of France, who dominated ski racing in the late 60’s, made a first appearance. The World Championships also set the foundation for the on-going organisation of Continental Cup events in Chile.

Two of the most distinguished members of the Chilean Ski and Snowboard Federation who have largely contributed to the development of snow sports within the country are former FIS Council Member Hector Belledone and Honorary Member of the FIS Sub-Committee for Alpine Courses Arturo Hammersley.

The 70th anniversary was celebrated by a dinner and ceremony for the wider Chilean ski family and the celebrations will continue at a number of Continental Cup events throughout the 2013 season, notably the South American Cups in La Parva and Nevados de Chillan.
