Sochi 2014 ORIS homologations underway
Recording, verifying, displaying and distributing results for all Olympic Winter Sports will be one of the most vital aspects of the 98 medal competitions during the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

This summer, the Olympic Results Information Service (ORIS) is being thoroughly reviewed and tested during individual sessions for each of the six FIS Olympic disciplines in Sochi.

Since early June, FIS professionals in each discipline together with the FIS IT experts have gathered with the ORIS experts, Sochi 2014 Results Team, media delegates and representatives of the Olympic time-keeper OMEGA and Olympic technology partner ATOS to ensure a smooth delivery of the competition information. The reviews have focused in particular on confirming that the Olympic competition results and information services will be according to the valid International Competition Rules for each FIS discipline.

While the FIS delegation and ORIS team have successfully homologated the system for Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined and Alpine Skiing, the disciplines of Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard are currently underway with Cross-Country Skiing subject to a second review in September 2013 following the optimisation of a few remaining details.

FIS IT Manager Francesco Cattaneo commented: “I have been very satisfied about the cooperation between all parties involved, Sochi 2014, OMEGA, ATOS and of course the ORIS team. Homologations are on a good way to be fully accepted and we will be there to join and support the team for the Olympic Winter Games.”

Background information

The ORIS system is based on a consultative process between the IOC, the respective IFs and the Olympic Local Organizing Committee. Initially launched as the Infotech Summer project, it was first used at the XVIII Olympic Winter Games in 1998 in Nagano under the name of ORIS. Each edition of the Games since then has seen innovations in the provision of timely results and Games information especially geared to meet the needs of the global media broadcasting and reporting from the Games. The goal of ORIS is to ensure a smooth delivery of the competition information on site, but also represents an essential technology independent written documentation of all Olympic sport rules and their implementation to competition situations.
