Kummer and Wild clinch season's last parallel slalom
Patrizia Kummer (SUI) and Vic Wild (RUS) won the third and last parallel slalom of the 2014 FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour.
The Swiss racer celebrated a back-to-back win on the Bucheben slope in Bad Gastein edging off local hero Julia Dujmovits (AUT) and Ester Ledecka (CZE) to second and third respectively.
Thanks to her third season win on the FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup circuit, Kummer also secured her career's fourth World Cup title being the fastest woman of the 2014 PSL World Cup with a total of 2,400. Ledecka and Ekaterina Tudegesheva (RUS) took second and third.
“It's unbelievable to win again in Bad Gastein and take home the Crystal Globe. I don't know why but I just keep the momentum. It seems that I love this slope.”
Thanks to her impressive streak with three wins and a sixth place finish so far this winter, the leading racer of the ladies' Alpine Snowboard Overall World Cup standings (3,400) is for sure the one to watch out for at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Although the 26-year-old from Mühlebach doesn't want to hear anything like this.
“I think everyone can win in Sochi. Everything can happen at the Olympics. I take it race after race.”
One of her main contenders for Gold next months could be Julia Dujmovits who finally got a decent PSL World Cup result in after having shown that she is on a good way in the PGS already with a win at the last Universiade.
“It's nice to be back on the podium on home soil. I didn't do any mistakes until the final. But then it was tough due to the bad visibility.
I was aiming to have fun today despite all the Olympic pressure. That worked out.”
First for Dufour and Wild
On the men's side, theexciting finals organised in the re-run format in front of a loud Austrian and Slovenian dominated crowd concluded with two firsts.
While Vic Wild won his career's first World Cup race in his 42nd start ahead of Zan Kosir (SLO), who now leads the FIS Alpine Snowboard Overall World Cup with 2,050 and Simon Schoch (SUI), Sylvain Dufour (FRA), who finished in fifth position', celebrated his career's first World Cup title with 1,740 ahead of Schoch and Lukas Mathies (AUT).
“I'm super happy about the title. I took the Yellow Bib in Carezza and wanted to keep it till the end. That's what I did. It's amazing to win the Globe.
I was dreaming of the Crystal Globe for more than 15 years now. Finally having it is amazing and gives me a lot of confidence going into the battle for the big Crystal Globe as well as the Olympics,” Dufour said.
Vic Wild stated after his career's milestone: “It's a nice feeling going into the Olympics with a win to your belt. I had pretty tough years in the past and also today wasn't easy. But I managed to fix a few things.”
The FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour continues next Saturday in Rogla, Slovenia, where the season's second parallel giant slalom will take place. The fifth event of the FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour is also the last parallel race of the Olympic qualifier period.
