Andreas Wellinger takes first win in the World Cup
With his first win in the World Cup, Andreas Wellinger prevented the triumph of Kamil Stoch in front of his home crowd in Wisla. Behind the 18-year-old German and the World Champion of Poland, Michael Hayboeck of Austria finished on a career best third place.
Wellinger, third after the first round with 127 m, jumped on 128.5 m in the final and with a total of 262.8 points he won 0.9 points ahead of Kamil Stoch. The local hero posted jumps on 134 m and 132 m that earned him a lead of 0.7 points over Hayboeck, who jumped on 137 m and 130 m.
4-Hills-Tournament winner Thomas Diethart closely missed the podium with his jumps on 131 m and 128.5 m and 260.4 points. Peter Prevc, who won at the Kulm last weekend, showed the longest jump of the day with 140.5 m in the first round, but his hands touched the snow at the landing. With 132.5 m in the final and 259.3 points he finished fifth. Jan Ziobro, who was in the lead after the first round with 133 m, landed at 126 m in the final and came in sixth with 255.0 points.
Also Gregor Schlierenzauer could not defend his fourth place of the first round. With 251.7 points he came in eighth, behind the best Norwegian Rune Velta (254.3 points). Anders Bardal in ninth (251.4 points) and Finland's Anssi Koivuranta (249.8 points) completed the Top 10 together with Jan Matura, who shared the tenth place with Koivuranta.
Piotr Zyla came in on a good 12th place in front of his home crowd on his 27th birthday, Severin Freund had some technical problems especially at the landing and was 13th. Jernej Damjan and Robert Kranjec in 14th and 15th completed the good team result of Slovenia. Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes, seventh after the first round, was a positive surprise also in 16th, like Norwegian Daniel-Andre Tande in 17th. The winner of the qualification, Klemens Muranka was 18th and came in ahead of Richard Freitag who lost his chances to achieve a better result in the final round. This fate was shared by his teammates Michael Neumayer, Andreas Wank and Marinus Kraus in 25th, 27th and 29th. Manuel Poppinger (22nd) and French Ronan Lamy Chappuis (24th) also scored some World Cup points.
Kamil Stoch can now look forward to his next home competition as overall World Cup leader, he extended his lead over Schlierenzauer to 59 points. In absence of Noriaki Kasai, Peter Prevc seized the chance and is now fourth, behind Simon Ammann. Andreas Wellinger moved up to seventh.
The World Cup continues already on Friday with the qualification at the next stop in Poland, Zakopane. A team competition will follow on Saturday, the individual event there is held on Sunday.
