World Championship Organisers discuss technology opportunities
On the first full day of meetings at the Technical Committee meetings in Zurich (SUI), the nine future FIS World Championship Organisers came together for a dedicated Workshop.

Under the theme of ‘Technology Fit for Purpose and Resources’ representatives from the future World Championship hosts had a chance to both listen and discuss the various challenges and opportunities that World Championships face as technology continues to evolve at a rapid rate.

Technology in its widest sense continues to be increasingly important, but also more accessible for Organisers to make the planning broadcast and communication of their event successful.

Representatives from the future FIS World Championships 2015 (Vail Beaver Creek - Alpine; Falun – Nordics; Kreischberg – Freestyle/Snowboard), 2016 (Kulm – Ski Flying), 2017 (St. Moritz – Alpine; Lahti – Nordics; Sierra Nevada – Freestyle/Snowboard), 2018 (Oberstdorf – Ski Flying), 2019 (Are – Alpine; Seefeld – Nordics; Park City – Freestyle/Snowboard) attended the Workshop.

Keynote speaker Niclas Ericson, TV Division Director for FIFA (International Football Federation) talked about content, multimedia and technology from the perspective of one of the biggest International Federations. Next up the participants had the chance to learn about a new initiative from a future FIS Word Championship as Falun’s Virtual Arena was presented in cooperation with the project’s primary developer, Ericsson.

The second half of the session gave each of the 2015 World Championship Organisers an opportunity to present how technology has been used in the development of their events. From Kreischberg’s presentation on how to use technology to engage the younger generation of fans, to Kulm’s talk about the new technology in Ski Flying and Vail Beaver Creek discussing technology’s contribution in its vision and mission it was a useful exchange of knowledge for all the World Championship Organising Committees. Additionally Ciaran Quinn, Chief Commercial Officer of deltatre, a specialist technology provider who is also the provider of the FIS Website presented “Digital, more than just an information tool”

Prior to the joint session, Organisers of the 2018 and 2019 FIS World Championships took their official first step as they attended an Orientation Meeting where they met with FIS officials to discuss all aspects of the next five years of preparations.
