Lahti 2017 Coordination Group Meeting defines next steps
The third Coordination Committee Group meeting for the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti (FIN) was staged last Friday 10 th October 2014 as the Local Organising Committee presented its current status report and upcoming plans to the Group.

Highlighting the presentation was the new corporate identity of the World Championships, which has a clear taste of winter while offering a unique flare with bold colours.

“Getting our look and feel finalised was very important for us,” said Lahti 2017 Secretary General Janne Leskinen. “While we have known we are hosting the Championships for over a year now, we can now establish a clear presence both in our community and to the ski world.”

Leskinen and his 2017 team also presented many updates on the technical and sports sides with significant construction completed since the Coordination Group meeting in the spring. The Local Organising Committee is working with three primary stakeholders, the Finnish Ski Association, the City of Lahti and the Lahti Ski Club.

As part of its planning for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the Organising Committee is also working on integrating the Lahti Games, which will enjoy its 90th edition this year, into the structure and planning of the World Championships. The goal is to test the infrastructure changes during upcoming editions of the Lahti Games. When the World Championships are complete, one of Nordic Skiing’s most enduring events will be left with an impressive legacy.

Incorporating Finland’s 100-Year anniversary as an independent nation into the World Championships is a key feature that will give the event a very special platform. As Finland’s national sport, the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will be the most important sporting event during the centennial year and will play a key role in the celebrations. A major signal as to just how important the World Championships are to the celebrations was the announcement that Finnish President Sauli Niinistö will serve as the Honorary President of the Lahti 2015 Organising Committee.

“There has been promising progress over the summer in Lahti, with the Organising Committee defining its structure and timetable for its work” said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. “The 100-year celebrations provide the event with a focal point for promotion and the Championships will be an excellent opportunity to engage the next generation in the sport.”
