FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard experts inspect PyeongChang 2018
From 10th-12th November 2014, FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard officials Joe Fitzgerald, Martin Fiala, Uwe Beier and Roberto Moresi, POCOG sport manager Yeon Chae, and venue designer Ecosign with Dave Felius attended their fifth inspection in PyeongChang (KOR) as part of the venue development of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. With the ski area already making snow, to prepare for the season opening, it was an opportune time to review the progress so far and make the final revisions on the designs.
FIS Freestyle Skiing Coordinator Joseph Fitzgerald said, “We are at the end of the design process and we have most of the courses and finish areas about 95% completed. We are working to integrate the finish zone, with video wall and scoreboards and determine the general location of the spectator stands. Our goal is to provide intimate finish areas where the spectators can interact with the competitors and create a great atmosphere."
“Bokwang Phoenix Park, is an established ski area which has been operating for some 15 years. With a focus on the long-term establishment of competition runs and legacy, the sites have been planned in detail.”
It is anticipated that the design will be completed by the end of November 2014 and the construction plan and budget will be defined over the winter with all construction finalised by late Autumn 2015.
Martin Fiala noted that "It has been a little bit of challenge to get the center lines done for the cross courses since we need to work in the treed area, actually I would call it a jungle, but now in the fall we see the terrain very well. The established ski area, golf courses and hotel complex set a good stage for this new Olympic venue."
The FIS officials are presently considering the different options for the test competitions, which will be staged over two seasons in the winters of 2016 and 2017. Those schedules will be confirmed at the FIS Technical Committee Meetings in spring 2015.
