Athlete of the Week: Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA)
The Champion is back on top! Nordic Combined superstar Jason Lamy Chappuis had a great weekend at Ramsau am Dachstein and returned to the to the top of the podium, exactly one year after winning his last World Cup at Schonach in December 2013. The three-time overall World Cup winner bounced back after a slower start into the season and continued his upward trend from Lillehammer: from a third place in an individual competition, he went on to collect another third place with the team and this first season victory in the individual in Ramsau am Dachstein.

With this 26th World Cup win of his career, he stepped up onto the podium of the all-time best list of Nordic Combined World Cup winner, into a third position he holds together with Norway’s Bjarte Engen Vik. And the gap to rank two is small: just two more victories and he will have caught up with Ronny Ackermann’s 28 wins, doable, even if this might be the last season for the French superstar who considers prioritizing his pilot training over the sport.

On this past weekend, the 28-year-old showed that he has not come to the status of a Nordic Combined superstar for nothing. Coming back from an average jump in the PCR on Friday, the complete French team prevailed during the changing conditions of the team event jumping part and then, Lamy Chappuis put his whole power to the team’s use and brought his team from a fourth place to the lead during his cross-country leg. With the usual French team spirit and will to fight, „les bleus“ held onto the third rank in the end and proved once more that the French team is to be contested with when it comes to team events, an especially interesting fact in a World Championship season in which France has to defend its Team World Champion title.

Another superb performance by Lamy Chappuis delighted the audience in the individual competition on the final day in Ramsau am Dachstein. Having to start from a +1:07 deficit because his average jump from the PCR was taken into account due to the difficult wind conditions, Lamy Chappuis caught up with the top group and showed tactical smarts by taking the lead and alternating in the lead with good friend Mikko Kokslien from Norway. Though both athletes were visibly tired towards the end of the race, Lamy Chappuis managed to beat out Kokslien and also the dangerous fast finisher Fabian Rießle from Germany on the final stretch, even with almost falling two times. Together with the equally tight race on Saturday, nobody could have wished for a more exciting Nordic Combined weekend with a more well-deserved Athlete of the Week: Jason Lamy Chappuis.
