Bad Kleinkirchheim super-G finally cancelled
Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria – The third super-G race of the season was finally called off on Sunday because of strong wind gusts and poor visibility. Due to warm temperatures and very soft snow in some sections of the course, the organisers and FIS race directors were first forced to delay the start of the race a couple of times in order to get the track ready with salt and water.

Unfortunately, a weather front moved into the Nockberge mountains around mid-day, as forecast. The race had to be interrupted after eleven racers because of strong wind gusts. Italy's Daniela Merighetti was in the lead at the time, ahead of her team-mate Nadia Fanchini. The interruption did last more than twenty minutes and by then the wind was still gusty and the visibility got worse due to intense snowfalls.

Coming down with bib number 8, USA's Julia Mancuso spoke to the press about the conditions. “It is kind of like what we ski in March,” said the 30-year-old. “They did a good job preparing with what they and I felt like it was in good condition for racing. But now the storms are definitely moving in and it's snowing the whole way down.”

For the second time in two days, the unfavourable weather conditions led to a cancellation in Bad Kleinkirchheim.

“We tried everything to secure a race today,” said FIS Chief Race Director Atle Skaardal. "In the morning, it was still warm and the track wasn't hard enough reason why we used water and salt. It took a little be longer as we thought for the snow to get more compact and this explained the delay.”

“Next to the weather we're are very small and the strong wind gust didn't give us the choice. We had to cancel the race. Now we will be looking into good solutions to reschedule the two cancelled races in Cortina and St.Moritz.”

The World Cup tour is now on its way to Flachau with a night slalom scheduled for Tuesday.
