Season's first re-run format parallel event and world premiere of the super final in Sudelfeld
The FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour returns to Sudelfeld February 6th and 7th to stage the fifth parallel event of the season on the Waldkopf slope which promises to be a very special event in one way and another.
After two single-run format events in both, parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom, next weekends pgs race will be the first to be staged with the re-run format.
However, Local Organisers, who will host the fifth World Cup in the Skiparadies Sudelfeld are up for some more highlights.
It's the first time ever that the qualifiers and finals will take place on different days with the qualification runs scheduled for Friday, Feb 6 at 1:30 PM CET and the finals to take place on Saturday, Feb 7 at 10 AM CET.
And it's the first time ever, a so-called super final between the winners of the ladies' and men's competition will go down right after the official prize giving ceremony on Saturday.
“Back in the days, I promised that the winner of the super final would get a Porsche Cayenne but my good friend doesn't work for the local car dealer anymore. So we will hand out a toy car plus an additional prize check of € 1,500 to the winner of the super final,” explained Josef Lechner, Head of the Local Organising Committee during yesterday's press conference.
In order to host a fair duel, the male finalist will enter the race with a time gap determined by Friday's qualification times.
Besides those innovations, the World Cup weekend in Bayrischzell has also the potential to clarify who will take home the pgs crystal globe.
As the parallel giant slalom in Sudelfeld is the pen-ultimate of the season, Austria's 2015 world championships bronze medallist Marion Kreiner has a first match point.
The Graz resident currently leads the ranking with 2,000 points after two wins in two races. Germany's Selina Joerg sits in second but is already 1,000 points behind.
If Kreiner can keep the momentum of the last races, it's pretty likely that the 34-year-old could at least take a huge step towards her career's second World Cup title.
“I'm feeling good, and I won't make the mistake to start calculating for the ranking. I won the qualifiers and the races in Carezza and Rogla, and I hope to tie on to these performances in Sudelfeld,” said Kreiner.
In the men's competition, the duel between current leader Zan Kosir (SLO, 1,400), two-time Olympic champion Vic Wild (RUS, 1,320) and reigning world champion Roland Fischnaller (ITA, 1,130) enters a promising third round.
With the World Cup venue presented in a new look due to brand new facilities such as a six-person chair lift and an impounding reservoir, everything is set for a thrilling show and interesting world premiere.
