Ahead of the Olympic Winter Games 2018, the IOC is holding a number of key gatherings in PyeongChang. FIS President Gian Franco Kasper attended the IOC Executive Board Meetings from 3rd to 5th February as well as the 132nd IOC Session from 6th-8th February in his capacities as Member of the Executive Board and IOC Member, at which he was joined by FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.
On the agenda of the IOC Session were discussions about the implementation of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations, the fight against doping in sport, reports on a wide range of the IOC’s activities, a presentation by the PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee on the final preparations for the Games, the election of a new IOC Member, and votes for positions on the IOC Executive Board.
With regard to Olympic Agenda 2020, the membership of the IOC Session was presented with an ambitious set of 118 reforms.
Entitled “The New Norm”, the plan provides cities with increased flexibility in designing the Games to meet long-term development goals, and ensure that host cities receive more assistance from the IOC and the wider Olympic Movement.
More than 80 of the 118 solutions that have been proposed would result in cost efficiencies without compromising the Olympic experience. The plan invites opportunities to reduce venue sizes, rethink transport options, optimise existing infrastructure and reuse the field of play for various sports.
