The Olympic family assembled in Buenos Aires (ARG) for a series of activities surrounding the third edition of the Youth Olympic Games. Buenos Aires will include a total of 12 days packed with elite summer sport competitions, in addition to numerous  activities and meetings taking place. 

FIS President Gian Franco Kasper participated at his final IOC Executive Board Meetings and Secretary General Sarah Lewis is on location to participate at the Olympism in Action Forum, the Youth Olympic Games as a member of the Lausanne 2022 Coordination Commission and the IOC Session in addition to many other activities. 

Other FIS Council Members present in Buenos Aires include Vice President Janez Kocijancic as President of the European Olympic Committees, Vice President Aki Murasato as Vice President of International Relations for Tokyo 2020, Vice President Mats Arjes as President of the Swedish NOC, Council Member Roman Kumpost as Vice President of the Czech NOC, Council Member Flavio Roda as Board Member of the Italian NOC. Honorary Member of the Legal Committee José Luis Marco was on hand in Buenos Aires to support the Argentian National Olympic Committee with the organisation of the entire programme.

Olympism in Action

Forum The Youth Olympic Games were preceded by the two-day “Olympism in Action” Forum, with over 1600 participants.The event took place to create a platform for diverse voices to share ideas on the overarching trends that affect the future of sport. The Olympism in Action Forum is an invitation from the IOC to welcome more people into the conversation.

Three host cities for Winter Olympic Games 2026 invited to Candidature Stage

The International Olympic Committee Executive Board (EB) received the report from the Olympic Winter Games Working Group 2026 assessing the feasibility of four Interested Cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2026 as well as an update on the progress of Olympic Agenda 2020’s New Norm, the plan that offers cost-efficient, transparent and flexible delivery of the Olympic Games, from candidature through to legacy.The IOC EB expressed its satisfaction with all the hard work, commitment and collaboration from the Interested Cities and NOCs that joined the process. 

Following the Executive Board’s recommendation, the International Olympic Committee Session invited Calgary (CAN), Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo (ITA) and Stockholm (SWE) to be Candidate Cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2026, on its final day of meetings.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “We are very pleased with the quality of the candidatures and look forward to extending our collaboration with the Cities and the respective National Olympic Committees. It was encouraging to see the impact of Olympic Agenda 2020/New Norm, with an average reduction of 15 per cent in their operating budgets compared to past Candidature Processes, and an increase from 60 to 80 per cent of existing venues being used. We will continue to tailor our approach to the specific needs and objectives of each candidate, ensuring that the Olympic Winter Games 2026 can adapt to support their ambitions and vision for the future.”
