Two World Cups left and two distance globes to be won
The final weekend of the 2014/15 FIS World Cup season will come to a close in Oslo, Norway with the 30 km and 50 km Holmenkollen competitions. Of the six crystal globes up for grabs four of them have already been decided. Marit Bjoergen (NOR) won the Overall World Cup globe during the Ostersund weekend before the World Championships in Falun, Sweden. Martin Johnsrud Sundby (NOR) won his second consecutive Overall crystal globe with his 10th place finish in Lahti.
With the completion of the Drammen City Sprints yesterday the spring crystal globes were handed out to Marit Bjoergen and Finn Hagen Krogh (NOR). For Bjoergen it was her 5th sprint globe, but her first since the 2005/6 season. For Krogh it was his first sprint globe.
This leaves just the Overall Distance globes to be decided in Holmenkollen this weekend. Marit Bjoergen (818) also leads this category, with a 101 point gap of her teammate Therese Johaug (717). Sunday's 30 km mass start free technique competition has 160 points up for grabs. There will be 100 points for the victory and 45 or 60 points available at bonus sections on each lap, with a total of 15 maximum per lap. Mathematically it is still possible for Johaug to win the distance globe but Bjoergen has yet to miss a World Cup distance podium this season.
On the men's side Dario Cologna (659) of Switzerland leads Sundby (576) by 83 points with 190 points still available from Saturday's 50 km. The men will have 6 bonus locations with a maximum of 15 points available per lap so it could be a finish line decision for the distance globe.
Only four athletes in history have won all 3 globes in one season. Marit Bjoergen could do it for the second time in her career this Sunday. Bjoergen already achieved the feat in 2005 season. Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) won all three in 2010, Virpi Kuitunen (FIN) in 2007 and Thomas Alsgaard (NOR) in 1998.
