The FIS Speed Skiing World Championships concluded last weekend in Idre Fjäll (SWE). 18 medals were up for grabs in six categories on the impressively steep Choken slope featuring a drop of 48°.

In speed one, the fastest category, World Cup leader Valentina Greggio (ITA) defended her World Championship title from the previous edition in 2015. She reached a speed of 171.50 km/h. Karine Dubouchet Revol (FRA) claimed second place with a speed of 170.76 km/h while home favourite Lisa Hovland-Uden completed the podium in third place with a speed of 169.18 km/h

In the men’s event, surprise winner Bastien Montens (FRA) set a benchmark of 176.93 km/h, which proved to be too quick for the rest of the field. Manuel Kramer (AUT) finished narrowly behind in second place with a speed of 176.66 km/h. His teammate Klaus Schrottshammer rounded out the podium in third with 176.03 km/h.

For the first time since 2003, no Italian man was on the podium. Medal favourite Ivan Origone skied into seventh place with a speed of 174.23 km/h.

Overall, Team France won seven medals ahead of host nation Sweden with four and Austria with two. For the first time, Denmark clinched a medal at Speed Skiing World Championships.

An increased number of fans were able to follow the action, exciting competition and live reactions and interviews by the athletes which proved as a great success. We would like to thank the resort and Organisers for staging an excellent event for teams and athletes and for a great side programme for spectators which included a special arena where children could try out Speed Skiing as part of the FIS SnowKidz programme.”
