Over a month after the season opener in Kranj (SLO) early July, the Ski Jumping Continental Cup continues this weekend with a total of three competitions. The first took place on Friday evening in Szczyrk (POL).
The win on the HS 106 hill there went to Austrian Philipp Aschenwald. The 22-year-old, who not among the very best in Kranj with a 13th and 14th place, won the competition with 108.5 m and 106 m and 265.1 points. For the Tyrolean this was the third win in the COC, he took his first two victories in February 2016 in Planica (SLO). "Today it was a little bit windy, but still, the weather conditions were good, so we could jump far. I’m really satisfied with my competition jumps. Today’s event is a very good start of Beskydy Tour for me", the winner said afterwards.
Ilmir Hazetdinov of Russia achieved a surprisingly strong result this evening. With jumps of 106 m and 105 m and 258.6 points, he came in on a career-best second place in his first appearance this summer. "I am satisfied my performance today, my jumps were on a high level", said Ilmir Hazetdinov.
Czech veteran Lukas Hlava took the third spot on the podium with 105.5 m and 104 m and a total of 250.8 points. "I am satisfied with my third place. I hope that tomorrow and in Frenstat on Sunday I will even better", said Lukas Hlava.
Przemyslaw Kantyka was fourth and the best of the hosting team of Poland. Estonia's Martti Nomme showed very good performance and achieved his best COC-result so far in fifth. He was followed by the best Slovene, Rok Justin, in sixth.
Austrian Markus Schiffner and Poland's Tomasz Pilch tied for seventh, the ninth place went to Aleksander Zniszczol of Poland, the Top 10 this evening were completed by Swiss Andreas Schuler.
The only 17-year-old Max Goller of the ski club Partenkirchen showed very strong jumps in his first ever competition in the Continental Cup and would have been fifth, but he was disqualified after the final round because his suit did not meet the regulations.
Kilian Peier of Switzerland leads the overall ranking with 200 points, followed by Evgeniy Klimov (160 points) and Philipp Aschenwald (138 points).
The tour this weekend continues for the athletes on Saturday with the next competition in Wisla (POL).
