Grass Skiing World Championship Closes Season
The Grass Skiing World Championships were held last week in Shichikashuku Miyagi, Japan, with participants from all around the globe taking part in the five men’s and five ladies’ events.

On the ladies side, a favourite of the home crowd, Japan’s Yukiyo Shintani led all participants in the medal race. She earned an impressive four medals, including claiming gold in the super combined and giant slalom events, while taking silver in the two runs of the super G. Shintani’s dominance shone through in the super combined, where she won by 1.12 seconds. Slovakia’s Barbara Mikova showed that she was the top skier in the super G as she won both the races by 0.15 and 0.40 seconds.

The sole race that kept Shintani and Mikova off of the podium was the slalom, which Austria’s Lia Wusits won. The 16 year-old dominated the field winning by well over a second.

Much like Shintani who was queen of the podium on the ladies’ side, it was the one-two punch of the Czech Republic’s Martin Stepanek and Jan Nemec that dominated the standings in the men’s races. The pair earned three medals each with Nemec earning two gold medals, in giant slalom and slalom, while also taking home a silver medal in one of the two super G races. Teammate Stepanek also earned two gold medals, both coming in the super G. His medal haul was rounded out with a silver medal in the slalom.

The men’s field was dominated by three nations. The Czechs combined for six medals, while Italy was not far off the pace, winning five medals in the five events. Completing the podium finishers were the Swiss that won two medals including the only non-Czech gold medal, which went to Mirko Hüppi in the super combined.

The event marked the end of the 2014 Grass Ski season, which saw 13 event weekends, including three in Japan between mid-June and the recently concluded World Championships.
