Dutchies clinch EC season opener
Babs Barnhoorn and Niek van der Velden claimed victory at the season's Europa Cup kick off in Landgraaf, Netherlands which took place Nov 27th.

The Dutch riders impressed the judges at the indoor slopestyle event held at SnowWorld with their style and deservedly took home the wins.

Barnhorn nailed back to back 360s on the kicker line while stomping a fs 180 to sw bs 180 off, gap fs lipslide and bs blunt 270 off in the rail section earning a total of 140.67 points.

The 17-year-old regular rider, who crashed in the qualifiers, said: “I still felt my head in the finals. But it wasn't that bad that I couldn't snowboard. I hoped to make the finals, so I'm very happy with the results.”

French athletes Chloe Sillieres (139.33) and Marion Haerty (131.00) took second and third.

On the men's side of things, up-and-coming talent van der Velden rocked the show with bs 900 mute to switch bs 900 stalefish as well as cab 180 to fs blunt 270, fs 270 to 450 out and switch fs blunt 270.

Earning 167.67 points and relegating Erik Bastiaansen (NED, 164.00) as well as Petr Horak (CZE, 157.00) to second and third respectively, the 14-year-old kid stated: “I thought it would be harder to win but I'm very happy, of course. I learned a lot of new things this year. This is my most important win ever.”

Last year, van der Velden had placed 18th, now he hopes to tie on to his result in the second contest scheduled for Friday, Nov 28th.

The contest, which was held for the third time in a row featured a new comp format due to the lack of space to built a decent slopestyle course.

Instead of having a line of all features, riders were asked to take separate kicker and jibbing runs twice with the best scores each to be added together.
