Simon Ammann and Noriaki Kasai tie for the win
Simon Ammann and Noriaki Kasai tied for the win in the second competition in Ruka (FIN) with a total of 272.2 points.
For Ammann this was already the second win this weekend, Kasai crowned his trip to Finland, after he was third on Friday, and, at age 42, broke his own record as oldest winner in the World Cup. In the first round Ammann jumped on 135.5 m and was sixth, Kasai was in the lead after the first half of the competition with the longest jump of the day on 145 m. Ammann then posted a jump on 144 m in the final, the 42-year-old Japanese landed at 131.5 m.
"Two satisfied guys"
Ammann said after his 23rd win in the World Cup: ““It's something special when you see two satisfied guys on top of the podium. I couldn't believe it when I saw today's results. Noriaki is in top shape again and I think that last season helps him to see things more relaxed now than others." Noriaki Kasai was also happy after his 17th win: "My jumps were perfect today, but I was not sure if it would be enough to win. Again I'm surprised that I made it to the podium. There's no secret to why I'm jumping so well. Probably the fact that I have a lot of self confidence and experience is helping me."
With jumps on 135 m and 137 m Severin Freund took the third place with 268.7 points. The ski flying World Champion said: "It was very windy today, especially on top of the hill, but it's always like that in Kuusamo. I made a huge step forward today. My jumps were very good, but the wind conditions were not perfect. I was on the podium here in Ruka three times in the last four years. It seems Kuusamo is a good place for me."
Prevc getting better
2.2 points behind, Peter Prevc came in fourth with 139.5 m and 135 m, followed by Michael Hayboeck. The best Austrian jumped on 143.5 m and 132 m and scored 263.8 points.
Roman Koudelka and Anders Fannemel shared the sixth place with 258.4 points. Anders Bardal (255.7 points) and Rune Velta (245.7 points) completed the good team result for Norway in eighth and tenth. Jernej Damjan of Slovenia was ninth.
Germany's Markus Eisenbichler is still in a good shape and finished eleventh. Gregor Schlierenzauer showed an upward trend in 12th. His teammates Stefan Kraft and Andreas Kofler came in 13th and 15th, Slovenian veteran Robert Kranjec was 14th. The Finnish athletes could not achieve the top result they were hoping for in front of their home crowd, but Lauri Asikainen (21st) and Ville Larinto (22nd) showed good performances. Once again Piotr Zyla was the best Pole, this time in 24th.
Serious falls of Wellinger and Lanisek
The competition was overshadowed by the serious falls of Andreas Wellinger and Slovenia's Anze Lanisek. While Wellinger lost control right after take-off and crashed on the knoll, Lanisek's left binding opened right before the landing. Both athletes were taken to the hospital in Kuusamo for further medical checks. At least for Andreas Wellinger, it seems that the injuries are not that serious: While head coach Werner Schuster said to German TV that it “doesn't look that dramatic”, the 19-year-old posted a photo on his instagram-account that shows him getting an infusion and giving a “thumbs-up”. Schuster also said on skisprungTV: “It was not a mistake of the jury. Andreas made a technical mistake. He feels a lot of pain in his back and his shoulder.”
