Tartu Maraton celebrates its 55th anniversary with a unique marathon

Next year, 16th January marks the 55th anniversary of Tartu Maraton. To celebrate the first Tartu Maraton, a unique marathon called Tartu-Kääriku Ski Tour will take place which will be skied on the original first Tartu Maraton course.

On the 16th of January 1960 start for the first Tartu Maraton was given in Tartu on the frozen river of Emajõgi. A 55km course ran along river, lakes and roads and finished in Kääriku which is close to Otepää.

„The aim of the 55th anniversary hike is not to compete against each other but to celebrate and honour the participants and the organizers of the first Tartu Maraton,” said director of Club Tartu Maraton, Indrek Kelk.

As a lot has changed during the 55 years, keeping the track 100% original as it was in the first Tartu Maraton is actually impossible. Foremost, skiing along highways and paved roads is impossible nowdays. But wherever possible the course will ran along the same track as it did 55 years ago.

“It will certainly be a challenge. We can’t demand that the participants should use authentic equipment but we would recommend for everyone to keep the retro spirit and use for example – wooden skis and retro clothing,” added Kelk.

Registration for the Tartu-Kääriku Ski Tour is now open but the number of places is limited. Only a total of 214 skiers can register for the race. That is exactly the number of skiers who started for the first Tartu Maraton 55 years ago.

Tartu Maraton 55th anniversary events take place alongside the FIS World Cup event in Otepää and after the individual sprint races on the 17th of January, another anniversary event will take place in Tehvandi ski stadium – a 6,5 km retro ski race.

This is free for all and the only requirement for participation is that you should have an historical ski equipment.

MARCIALONGA

Marcialonga embodies the past and the present of cross country skiing in Italy. Now it is time to look ahead, to the evolution of the discipline. Marcialonga is being put under the scientific lens by the Italian CeRiSM (Sport, Mountain & Health Research Centre) and the new Marcialonga Science project aims to evaluate and measure the impact of the double poling technique on muscles, fibres and heart of some athletes during and after the event, scheduled on 25 January 2015.

In recent years, CeRiSM (www.cerism.it) has devoted much of its research activity to cross country skiing. Hundreds of skiers are tested each year, several projects have been developed on the Nordic discipline and results have been published in important scientific journals of international standing.
The Marcialonga Science project aims to evaluate muscle fatigue of upper and lower limbs, in medium-to-high level cross country skiers who will be selected from the ranking in the last edition of Marcialonga and who are asked to voluntarily perform a few tests for specific muscles using the double poling technique. Tests will be held at the XC Stadium in Val di Fiemme from 19 to 23 January 2015. During the Sunday’s race, the heart rate will be monitored and once the race will be over, an eventual neuromuscular test will be taken in order to determine the extent of specific muscle fatigue. The results of the study will be presented at the International Congress on Science in Nordic Skiing scheduled in Finland next June, and at the Mountain Sport Health Congress in Rovereto (Italy) next November.
On the eve of the 2015 ski-marathon, the Marcialonga Story promo event will once again take the floor, better yet…the snow, and all participants will experience the true spirit of XC skiing, wearing original equipment (dated pre-1976) and racing an 11k-long competition from Lago di Tesero to Predazzo town centre. A Register of vintage cross-country skis has been created in order to collect information, data and pictures of skis crafted in different years, and is available on www.marcialonga.it. Entries are open, cost 30 € and include a super vintage race packet with a pair of winter socks, a unique cotton bib, a shoulder bag and a box of Rode wax.
Next year’s Marcialonga will be also supporting the Italian Association against Cancer L.I.L.T.: in fact the Marcialonga Stars event on Saturday 24 January aims to draw attention to cancer fight and raise funds for new machineries needed at the Proton Therapy Centre in Trento. Everyone is invited to the Marcialonga Stars event and donate.

JIZERSKÁ

The 48th ČEZ Jizerská 50, which will take place in Bedřichov in the Jizera Mountains, is being expanded with the addition of a new race. During the Friday programme, racers will compete in a double-poling sprint on a 1.5 km circuit. The appeal of the new Nyč Sport Sprint is enhanced by the fact that it will take place under artificial lighting. A total of CZK 35,000 in prize money will be divided among the top sprinters. The race’s capacity is limited to 200 skiers.
The double-poling sprint, which is a standard element of long-distance cross-country skiing, is a further expansion of the plentiful programme of the ČEZ Jizerská 50 weekend. At the same time, it is a unique two-round event. Racers from the ranks of both enthusiasts and elite skiers must first compete in a qualifying round, in which they will start in pairs at 15-second intervals. The fastest 20 men and ten women will then face each other in the final round.
“We try to enhance the Jizerská 50 programme every year, to bring in attractive new aspects for our racers and, at the same time, to maintain the tradition of the event. The evening sprint fulfils these parameters and brings another interesting measure of the strengths between professional skiers and hobbyists,” explains David Douša of the Jizerská 50 organising team. “Thanks to the interesting qualification system, where racers will start in pairs at 15-second intervals, and the joint final, the sprint will also bring in spectators.”
Race qualification starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the final at 5:45 p.m. Friday evening was selected for a reason. “We wanted to attract to the sprint, in which total prize money in the amount of CZK 35,000 will be awarded, not only amateur skiers, but also the biggest stars of the Jizerská 50 and the Swix Ski Classics series, who will focus on the main race on Saturday,” adds David Douša.
The number of starting places is limited to 200 sprinters. The starting fee is CZK 250 when paid in advance or CZK 350 at the venue, provided that the event is not already sold out. You can register for the Nyč Sport Sprint at www.jiz50.cz/cs/registrace.
