Thompson and Schauer top the field in Val Thorens
The Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour got back into action in grand fashion with men’s and ladies’ races in Val Thorens (FRA).

The course and conditions provided the athletes with the perfect chance to put on an excellent show as there were several memorable and close heats throughout the day.

One of the most memorable heats of the day was the ladies’ Big Final, where the four finalists battled it out down the length of the course. In the end the Canadian duo of Marielle Thompson and Georgia Simmerling came in first and second in a photo finish, with overall World Cup leader Thompson earning the win. Alizee Baron (FRA) gave the Val Thorens fans reason to celebrate as she crossed the line in third place.

The men’s Big Final was equally entertaining as Andreas Schauer (GER) gave a hearty fist pump as he crossed the finish line ahead of hometown hero Jean Frederic Chapuis. Austria’s Johannes Rohrweck was a distant third, but nevertheless could celebrate his second-ever World Cup podium. Schauer was clearly the man to beat in the final as he was the only men’s competitor to win all of his heats leading up to the last race of the day. He now is in a tie for the overall World Cup lead with Austria’s Thomas Zangerl.

Tomorrow action continues in Val Thorens with a very full Saturday of action with both qualifications and the race taking place for the men’s and ladies.
