Dufour-Lapointe and Kingsbury cap Deer Valley weekend in style
DEER VALLEY, USA – The final event of a stacked FIS Freestyle weekend took place under the lights at Utah's Deer Valley Resort, with a thrilling dual moguls competition that saw Justine Dufour-Lapointe (CAN) and Mikael Kingsbury walk away with victories, yellow moguls leader bibs, and trophies for winning the respective men's and ladies' athlete of the weekend accolades.

Saturday's dual moguls competition took place at a blistering pace, with head-to-head elimination heats on tap from the outset of competition. And while duals can often lead to unpredictable results, the Deer Valley competition saw, for the most part, the world's top moguls skiers step up in round after round in front of the massive crowd gathered at the bottom of the infamous Champion run.

Ladies' competition came down to the two biggest stars in the sport facing off in the super final, as Hannah Kearney (USA) and Dufour-Lapointe were able to out-ski and outlast the field through the gruelling dual moguls format.

While history has generally favoured Kearney in the duos' head-to-head match-ups, Saturday's contest looked different from the outset, as Dufour-Lapointe pulled out to an early lead that she was able to hold and extend, all while maintaining clean form throughout her run and nailing both of her jumps. Kearney, meanwhile, in trying to reign in the youngest Dufour-Lapointe sister, seemed to struggle with her line, with slight-but-noticeable bobbles marking her run through Champion's lengthy middle section.

When the dust settled, Dufour-Lapointe's smoothness stood up over Kearney's more difficult jumps, and the win went to the young Canadian as she also overtook her sister Chloe Dufour-Lapointe for top spot on the moguls World Cup leaderboard.

"I'm so excited right now. I'm so happy. I worked hard for this weekend, I said to myself that I would give it my all, and it's my first victory of the year, and I have this new yellow bib on me to head into the world championships," Dufour-Lapointe gushed from the hectic finish area, "Hannah is my biggest competitor, and she won in Canada and today I won here in the USA, so, that's even now!"

Third place in the ladies' event went to Britteny Cox (AUS), who showed surprise at being awarded the small final win over Deborah Scanzio (SUI) in a dual heat that saw the Australian finish slower than the Swiss skier but manage to eke out the podium by the barest of margins for her third career podium.

In the men's competition, it came down to the indomitable Kingsbury and the unheralded Dylan Walczyk (USA). Walczyk, with 24 World Cup starts and only one podium to his credit was in tough against three-time men's Freestyle overall champion Kingsbury any way you looked at it. However, he had been skiing excellently throughout the night, and looked primed to capitalize on a Kingsbury mistake.

Kingsbury, however, rarely makes mistakes, and ended up taking a clear win to make for his second in as many days and third straight on the season. Still, to his credit, Wlczyk held his own, putting down one final solid run that forced Kingsbury to push himself right through to the end.

"Last night I had a little fever and didn't sleep very well, but still I was very motivated today," said Kingsbury following podium awards, "Now I'm heading into world championships with three wins in a row and I can't ask for more. I just want to keep skiing like I've been doing. I don't want to change anything."

And then, just as Kingsbury and Walczyk exchanged high-fives in the finish area, the snow really began to come down, and the cover was closed on another edition of one of the great competitions in skiing at the Deer Valley Freestyle International.
