Day 1 of the TRIPLE goes to Eric Frenzel
Eric Frenzel has set himself up as the top contender for the 2015 Nordic Combined TRIPLE. The German has taken the first victory of the weekend in the 1-jump, 5 km cross-country opening stage. He finished the race 2.3 seconds earlier than runner-up Jan Schmid from Norway who will spearhead the chasing pack on Day 2. The third spot on the podium went to 17-year-old Jarl Riiber who claimed the first podium of his career.

In the first stage of the day, the jumping event, the two new faces Fabian Steindl and Jarl Riiber rules supreme. The young Austrian took the intermediate win with a jump of 105 metres which translated into 133.2 points. This put him 10 seconds ahead of fellow youngster Jarl Riiber from Norway who had landed at 107.5 metres, the longest jump of the day. Teammate Haavard Klemetsen raked in the third place with 101 metres and 123.5 points but started already 39 seconds behind the leader Steindl.

Title defender Eric Frenzel held a very promising fifth rank with a time behind of 46 seconds only and was in an excellent position to start well into his operation „defend TRIPLE title“. Out of the pursuers, Austria’s Bernhard Gruber and Lukas Klapfer positioned themselves on the ranks 11 and 13.+1:10 and +1:13 behind Steindl. In this pursuing group, also World Cup grands Johannes Rydzek, Alessandro Pittin, Akito Watabe and Jason Lamy Chappuis had to deal with time behinds between +1:14 and +1:17, all well within striking distance. The Norwegian team had to deal with some weaker jumps with fast skiers Moan and Kokslien +1:28 and +1:33 behind.

Ski Jumping Results

In the short 5 km cross-country race, youngsters Steindl and Riiber stayed together as a leading duo for most the way with Riiber taking the lead and making the pace. The feared „Willi-Denifl-corner“ with its downhill ultimately cost Steindl his dreams of the podium for the race when he fell on the last lap and lost contact to the leader Riiber. Behind the two, Eric Frenzel showed a strong cross-country shape and kept on making up time, catching up with Riiber on the second part of the last lap. Norwegian Jan Schmid managed to hold onto Frenzel even after teammate Haavard Klemetsen, Yoshito Watabe, Taihei Kato and the other Top Ten athletes after jumping had to let go.

Once more, the race was made very exciting by the fast skiers in the pursuing group who made up a lot of time. Alessandro Pittin skied to from a 15th to a final fourth place and the fastest time came from Norwegian Magnus Moan who improved his intermediate 27th rank to a final fifth, Johannes Rydzek also jumped the „fast train“ and ended up on rank six. The three athletes finished 18, 19.7 and 21 seconds after Frenzel. The rest of the Top Ten results went to Haavard Klemetsen, Bernhard Gruber, Yoshito Watabe and Lukas Klapfer.

As only the Top 50 are premitted to start tomorrow, Karl-August Tirmaa, Pavel Churavy, Arttu Mäkiaho, Pawel Slowiok, Lukas Runggaldier and Armin Bauer will have to be spectators for the rest of the weekend. The same is true for Miroslav Dvorak and Ivan Panin who did not start and French superstar Jason Lamy Chappuis who was not able to finish the cross-country race.
