Eric Frenzel unstoppable in Japan
Eric Frenzel has also taken the second Individual Gundersen competition in Sapporo, Japan. Only a few weeks away from the World Championships in Falun, the German already is in great shape, giving his competitors no chance. He finished 1.8 seconds ahead of local hero Akito Watabe. The bronze rank went to USA’s Taylor Fletcher who finished 3.5 seconds behind Frenzel.

The ski jumping round ended with another victory for young Austrian Fabian Steindl. In perfect conditions and sunshine, Steindl jumped 138 metres and with a point total of 137.6 points, this meant 26 seconds of head start on runner-up Eric Frenzel. Frenzel also jumped 138 metres and made his ambitions for the day’s victory quite clear. Following three seconds after Frenzel was teammate Manuel Faißt who showed 136 metres.

Local hero Yoshito Watabe only claimed the fourth intermediate rank today after a jump of 133.5 metres (129.2). Veterans Christoph Bieler and Haavard Klemetsen had 135.5 and 133 metres to show for and followed out on the track +0:43 and +0:44 seconds after Frenzel. Mario Stecher also returned into the ski jumping Top Ten with 133 metres and the intermediate ninth rank.

The first fast pursuing group was formed by Akito Watabe, Fabian Rießle and Lukas Klapfer who held ranks 11, 12 and 13 (+1:21 - +1:33), a second one consisted of Björn Kircheisen and Johannes Rydzek, +1:50 and +1:52.

The cross-country race took place in nice and sunny conditions and with a big supporting crowd for the Japanese local heroes. Pursuers Eric Frenzel, Manuel Faißt and Yoshito Watabe closed the gap to leader Fabian Steindl in the first part of the race and for a while it was a leading foursome which made the pace. Behind these four, the brothers Fletcher were working together to make up a lot of time from their starting positions around 2 minutes behind the leader.

At the end of the third lap, a big group had formed at the top of the field with Taylor Fletcher closing the gap to leaders Frenzel, Faißt and Yoshito Watabe, bringing Johannes Rydzek, Haavard Klemetsen, Taihei Kato, Lukas Klapfer Fabian Rießle and Akito Watabe with him.

As yesterday, Frenzel’s challengers tried to attack on the long uphill out of the stadium going into the last lap. Taylor Fletcher showed a high energy performance and launched an attack, even though he had to ski fast before to close the gap to the leaders. Frenzel was able to match the American’s pace, as well as Akito Watabe to the delight of the crowds. The race was decided with Frenzel going into the stadium a couple of metres ahead of Watabe and Fletcher. The two battled for the remaining podium ranks with Watabe having the better end over the exhausted Fletcher.

Behind the podium, Haavard Klemetsen skied to another strong fourth rank as well as Yoshito Watabe who managed to improve his result from yesterday to a fifth place today. Bryan Fletcher also reached the Top Ten and finished as eighth.
