Hard training summer for Tomas Portyk
Tomas Portyk is not having a comfortable summer at all, as he tells on the website of the Czech Ski Association. For the young Nordic Combined athlete who’s talent definitely lies in ski jumping, the summer equals „training hell“ as he is trying to push his limits in the cross-country part.

„Especially cycling is painful for me, sometimes we’re on the bike about 6 hours and it just hurts, especially in the back“, the nineteen-year old reports. Cycling played a big part in Portyk’s training, especially in an altitude camp in Livigno earlier in July in which the basis for a successful cross-country season has to be laid. „It definitely slowed me down in terms of the jumping hill but I know that I have to give everything in the training now. It is really important for me, I have to improve in the cross-country part.“

And with a second rank in the national championships in Liberec and a first rank in the junior category, at least some small rewards were coming for Portyk. After that, Portyk enjoyed 10 well-deserved days of holiday in Croatia before returning to the hard work: a fitness camp in Harrachov, jumping training and a camp in Planica, right before the start of the Summer Grand Prix.

Good thing that the young athlete managed to finish all school exams before his big training summer started. „With such a program, it would be really difficult to find time to relax in the summer, if I still had to do a lot of school work. I really had to put some effort into it but everybody told me that I did not want to do this now, during the holidays and they were right“, the resident of Lomnice laughed. „So I really worked hard for school and I can breathe easier, now that I have only graduation left.“

In spite of his good school work, Portyk still has s little bit of a rebellious streak left: „I am planning for more tattoos, this would be my sixth one. But I will rather do it before the winter because sun is not good for it. He past tattoos have more or less always been about English inscriptions. „Yes, that was the motto“, Portyk says „but now more writing will probably not fit, so I am thinking about an image now. Something’s shaping up, I’ve made a sketch but so far, only for myself. You’ll have to wait and see“, he concludes.
