Peter Prevc: "Planica was very interesting"

In our series "FIS Ski Jumping-Talk" we present interviews with ski jumping athletes and officials. Today: Peter Prevc (22).

Despite his young age, it seems that Peter Prevc has been one of the world's best ski jumpers for ages. He took the first of his six World Cup wins in January 2014 at the Kulm. Already a year earlier he won silver and bronze in the individual competitions at the World Championships in Val di Fiemme. After he was the first jumper in history to fly 250 m last March in Vikersund, he missed the overall World Cup title in the most dramatic final ever. Severin Freund was crowned the overall winner just because he won more competitions last season.

FIS Ski Jumping: Hello Peter, how are you? Peter Prevc: I'm fine, thanks. Berkutschi: You didn't compete in the Grand Prix in Japan and Russia. Are you focusing on training right now?

Prevc: Yes, the preparation for the World Cup season is my priority. I will also not take part in Almaty. This week we are on a training camp in Klingenthal. Right now, the plan is that I'll compete again in Hinzenbach to test my shape.

FIS Ski Jumping: Are you already looking forward to the World Cup opening in Klingenthal?

Prevc: Honestly, yes. It's been a while since we had our last World Cups in March. Since then I was training a lot, like most of the other athletes in summer. That's why I'm already looking forward to the World Cup.

FIS Ski Jumping: Let's take a look back. In March we witnessed an outstanding World Cup final in Planica. How did you experience the close race between you and Severin Freund?

Prevc: Yes, Planica was an interesting weekend (laughs). Of course, for me it was not that great, but it was definitely spectacular for the fans. Actually it was an extremely successful weekend, all three days of competition went great for me. Before the final I was so far behind, that nobody would have expected that it could become that exciting.

FIS Ski Jumping: How long did it take you to get over this close defeat?

Prevc: It didn't take that long. I kinda packed last season up and put it away in order to focus on the future. I went on vacation for a week and didn't think about ski jumping at all. That was good.

FIS Ski Jumping: Did it make a difference for you that Jurij Tepes was the one who prevented you from winning the overall title? Or did this not matter at all?

Prevc: This didn't matter. The result decided it. I know, that it was a very difficult situation for Jurij. He had no choice, he had to jump far in order to achieve a good result himself. Every other athlete would have done the same thing.

FIS Ski Jumping: So you had no problems within the team?

Prevc: (laughs) No, we are highly motivated and we are looking forward to next season.

FIS Ski Jumping: How much motivation can you draw from last season's final? You were so close to winning that crystal globe. Do you want it even more now?

Prevc: I was already very motivated before that. Maybe it's a little bit more after this close decision. But I can't predict, if I'll win it next year. You can only try to always give your best, to train hard. Now, in summer, and also during the season. I do that, but I've also done it before.

FIS Ski Jumping: What are your goals for next season?

Prevc: Right now I'm completely focusing on the beginning of the season. I hope that I won't suffer any injuries. Then we'll see what happens. I want to jump on my best level during the whole season, from November to March. That's my goal.

FIS Ski Jumping: So you are not focusing on a special event, like the 4-Hills-Tournament or the Ski Flying World Championships?

Prevc: No, I want to show my best performance in every competition. But of course I would like to win the 4-Hills-Tournament one day. And also the World Championships at the Kulm are something special.

FIS Ski Jumping: Over the last years, at World Championships and Olympic Games, the Slovenian team was always among the favorites and couldn't really live up to these expectations. How important would a medal at the Kulm be for the team?

Prevc: That would be great. The team was always extremely strong over the last years. Now we want to take that final step.

FIS Ski Jumping: Thanks a lot for the interview and all the best for you!
