Just a few days after her former teammate Brad Martin called it quits, Alex Duckworth also announced her retirement from competitive snowboarding.
The 2007 Canada Winter Games champion from Nova Scotia told CBC News that the time is right to step away from snowboarding competitions in which she's participated since graduating high school.
"After the Sochi Games, I hadn't made any deliberate plans on when my retirement would happen. But after competing last season, I took a moment to just digest and realized I'd reached most of my goals in the sport. It's a little bit taxing — these action sports, on the body,“ she said.
"The fear definitely starts to be an element as you're getting older. You're sort of registering that risk a little bit more cognitively."
The 28-year-old rider who was born and raised in Kingsburg started her snowboard things off at Martock at the age of 10 and ever since made her way through the Canadian team rosters thanks to the support of her family.
Back in 2006, she earned a big air silver medal at the Junior World Championships.
The year before, she celebrated her debut on the World Cup tour in Whistler and has competed in 24 halfpipe World Cup events ever since.
In her sole slopestyle World Cup back in Calgary 2010, the 2014 Olympian earned her career's sole WC podium finish as third.
