In conjunction with ISPO, the largest worldwide event for the international winter sports industry, a symposium of ‘Dein Winter.Dein Sport’ (Your Winter, Your Sport) was staged on Monday, 25thJanuary 2016 in Munich (GER), calling for more snow sports in schools to get the next generation actively involved and educated with winter sports. This aligns with the FIS campaign “Bring Children to the Snow” which shares these objectives.
The three initiators of the campaign, the German Ski Association (DSV) German Snowboard Association (SVD) and German Ski Instructors Association (DSLV), together with key figures in economics and politics, underlined the significant role of snow sports for the development of children and teenagers.
To increase winter sports activities in schools, educational institutions will be supported by a number of measures including the provision of a central online information platform for teachers and specific offerings for the organisation of winter sports days/weeks. Furthermore, in the 2016/17 season, a total of EUR 10,000 will be made available to support ten winter sports projects in schools.
The initiative is supported by a number of active and former winter sports athletes including double Olympic silver and bronze medallist Tobias Angerer (Cross-Country), double Olympic Champion Markus Wasmeier (Alpine Skiing) and Olympic Champion Nicola Thost (Snowboard).
During the symposium, all athletes expressed their full support to promote winter sports in Germany. “We need to provide children the opportunity to get outdoors – especially those who weren’t raised this way. We have to fight the excuse that it has become too expensive. If we inspire kids for snow sports now, they will stick with it in future,” Wasmeier said.
