First IOC Coordination Commission visit in Beijing 2022

FIS President Gian Franco Kasper and Secretary General Sarah Lewis attended the IOC Coordination Commission for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 which completed its first full inspection visit to the Chinese capital on 12th October 2016 to check on the progress of preparations.

As part of the inspection, the group spent time visiting mountain venues north of Beijing. The Zhangjiakou zone, located in the Chongli District, will play host to the majority of skiing competitions, with Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding taking place at the Genting Snow Park. Cross-Country, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined are also set to be held in the region.

The Commission also visited Beijing 2022’s new headquarters in a converted steel plant on the western edge of the city, and held discussions with the Organising Committee focused on five main topics: governance; sport; venues and infrastructure; commercial; and communications and engagement.

Gian Franco Kasper stated: “This was the IOC Commission’s first visit following the election of Beijing 2022 and it is pleasing to see the organisational structures are already firmly in place to enable the Organising Committee to work effectively.”

Sarah Lewis added: “The current status of preparations for the Beijing 2022 Games are impressive including the venue development, sports management, and the Chinese Ski Association's activities to develop the athletes and teams. Additionally we're hugely excited about the developments for recreational winter sport activities in China."
