„The goal is an individual medal in Lahti and the team gold!“
Things have been moving fast for Norway’s Magnus Krog in the past year. Finishing his best season to date on an overall sixth position, fighting for the podium and the victory on more than one occasion and becoming a father for the first time right after the winter brought some major changes. For TUESDAY TALK, he looks back on the past season and gives insights into his goals and life with his little bundle of joy.

You just came back from a training camp in Oberhof. Can you tell us a little bit of what was on schedule?

Magnus Krog: Yes. We had a great stay in Oberhof. As usual, the weather was grey and a little bit dreary but the training conditions were close to optimal, especially on the jumping hill. It was cold, which is good for the ice track and just a little bit of wind. We had a focus on the jumping side at the beginning of the camp and with the new lift in Oberhof, we were able to train very effectively and got many jumps in. At the end of the camp, we went more to ski in the ski tunnel.

How is the Norwegian team preparing until the season start in Ruka from now on? You still have a big highlight with the national championships coming up, right?

Krog: That’s right, first we have the nationals and then it is Ruka. I think everybody is very much looking forward to it and we are a motivated, offensive group, so of course we think that we are well-prepared. There will be some differences between people who plan to be in top shape right from the beginning of the season and those who are taking it a bit easier at first with regards to the World Championships in February. That’s the case in our team, too. But I think I have only rarely experienced that there are that many people on our team really looking forward to the season start in Ruka. It looks like the whole team is quite well-prepared for it. (smiles)

The past season was quite a successful one for you. Not only did you celebrate two World Cup victories but you also finished on an all-time high 6th rank in the overall World Cup. Do you think you can continue your success streak in the next winter?

Krog: I, of course, hope for that and it feels like I have found a little more stability in my jumping over the summer. This was quite challenging for me in the middle of last season when I had a period of bad jumping after Christmas.

Which goals have you set for yourself?

Krog: The goal is to win an individual medal at the World Championships in Lahti and of course gold in the team event!

The Norwegian team looked for funds to support a sewer to make the jumping suits via a crowdfunding platform for the first time this year. What can you report on the progress of this campaign?

Krog: It went very well so far. The Norwegian people were quite generous to contribute and we think it is a very exciting project. We are at 88 % of our set goal and currently have 27 days to arrive at 100 %, so we hope to be able to successfully conclude it before the season starts. And I would of course like to use to opportunity to invite everybody who would like to help the Norwegian Nordic Combined team on their way to World Championship gold to contribute a little bit so that we can make it fully over the finish line. (laughs)

You also became father to a little boy named Odin half a year ago. How have the first six month of parenthood been so far?

Krog: It is very funny to be a dad. It was an amazing experience when Odin was born. Now the days are going by fast and of course it’s a little more hectic than it was before. He needs a lot of attention but also gives some much laughter and joy back! (smiles).
