Study groups inspect Championships to gain first-hand knowledge
Members of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Organising Committee, as well as the St Moritz 2017 and Are 2019 Alpine Ski World Championship Organisers amongst many other Organising Committees, visited Vail-Beaver Creek to inspect the installations and develop an understanding of the infrastructure and organisation ‘behind the scenes’.
The POCOG team was led by its President Yangho Cho and included 29 staff members. During the visit, the team met with FIS President Gian Franco Kasper and FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis to discuss key aspects of the preparations for the Games
The Study Group programme consisted of familiarisation with the organisational structure of the World Championships. Participants visited a number of areas including the Vail Security Command Centre, the Welcome Centre, the Championships Plaza, Hospitality Areas, and International Broadcast and Press Centre. There were also tours of the stadium, festival and awards. During their stay, the participants were able to watch the races and participate in side events.
Meanwhile, the St Moritz 2017 and Are 2019 delegations have been on site since just before the start of the Championships and some key persons have been integrated as volunteers.
“For the members of our Organisation, it is important to participate in this study group. This is an excellent opportunity to observe operations during the event,” said Hugo Wetzel, President of the St Moritz 2017 delegation.
The Study Group programme introduced by FIS promotes on-site learning experience and establishes networking opportunities between current and future World Championship and Olympic Winter Games Organisers. It is part of the Transfer of Knowledge programme that involves gathering of facts and figures, sharing of information and exchange of know-how during the preparation phases.
