Athlete of the Week: David Pommer (AUT)
Sometimes life has this funny way of pulling you back before you can take a step up to a new and better level. This might be what Austrian newcomer David Pommer is thinking after the last Continental Cup weekend in Utah, USA.

Sidelined due to a knee injury for the full 2014/15 season, Pommer has been improving a great deal and showing a great shape during the Summer Grand Prix of 2015 when he scored a second place in the Team Sprint in Oberwiesenthal together with teammate Mario Seidl and ranked in the Top Ten two more times in the individual events in Oberwiesenthal and Oberstdorf.

Managing to carry his great shape over to the wintertime, David Pommer continued to turn heads in the internal qualification events in Rovaniemi and Ruka before the World Cup start. He successfully fought for a place on the team only to have to go to the Continental Cup in the first period to get COC points as he did not have any from the previous season - a prerequisite to be allowed to start in the World Cup.

He managed to deal with this setback in an impressive way: Pommer came to Utah Olympic Park and Soldier Hollow, saw and conquered: two victories and one seconds place (by 0.1 seconds only) showed a complete Nordic Combined athlete who can be among the best jumpers of the Continental Cup but also make up time of the cross-country track and hold his own against fast skiers.

The 22-year-old from Inzing grew up on the cross-country tracks of Nordic Combined venue Seefeld and has been fascinated by the big World Cup event there ever since. With Seefeld being awarded the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019, the big goal for Pommer’s career is set: win at the championships in his home venue that is also his main sponsor: „I cheered when I heard that the World Championships went to Seefeld. This will be THE main highlight. I think even an Olympic victory wouldn’t make me as happy as a World Champion title in Seefeld.“

With his promising start in the Continental Cup, the first step in this direction is made: Pommer obtained COC points and unlocked an additional quota spot for his team in the second period. Welcome to the World Cup, David Pommer!
