FIS Medical Committee contributes to educational measures on sports concussion

On 28th January 2016, a Conference on Sports Concussions was organised by the AISTS Master of Sports Administration programme in Lausanne (SUI). It was the first conference for International Sports Federations tackling the topic of sports concussion and the long term risk for international governing bodies.

FIS was represented by Hans Spring (SUI), a long-time member and since 2014 Honorary Member of the FIS Medical Committee, who outlined the measures taken by FIS in this important area.

He reported: “The meeting dealt with insurance related questions of long term consequences as a result of concussions (chronic traumatic encephalopathie CTE). It is important that International Sports Federations raise awareness of these possible consequences. FIS can be proud of being a forerunner to have implemented state-of-the art guidelines on concussion in the FIS Medical Guide. These guidelines recommend appropriate measures to be taken after a concussion, not only to treat a concussion but to take into consideration long term effects.”

The key message to all International Sports Federations was to "be prepared" by implementing educational guidelines within this area and to effectively communicate them within their sports.
