Lahti 2017 Countdown Clock unveiled

On 19th February 2016, the Lahti 2017 countdown clock presented by Stora Enso was inaugurated at Lahti market square. The clock was designed by Anssi Lassila and modelled and built by students at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LAMK) and Salpausselkä Further Education.

One of the major themes of Lahti 2017 is environmental friendliness. Therefore, the clock was produced from oil treated Finnish pine heartwood by Stora Enso. It is an example of how wood can be used for various purposes.

“The baseline was to make an interesting sculpture made from wood and to use Finnish expertise and wood material in the best possible way. The ”house of cards” kind of structure is the basis of the clock. The clock also has elements inspired by the snowy graphic look”, said Architect Lassila.

The unveiling was attended by the Mayor of Lahti Jyrki Myllyvirta, the Chairman of Lahti Ski Club Juha Viljamaa, FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis, Stora Enso Vice President of Stakeholder Relations Timo Heikka along with cross-country skiers Aino Kaisa Saarinen, Sami Jauhojärvi and ski jumper Janne Ahnonen.Lahti Countdown Clock
