Season Finals & 50 years of Schwarzwaldpokal Schonach
A last weekend full to the brim with competitions and side events is awaiting Nordic Combined’s elite in Schonach. Three competitions, the one and only Team Event, an Individual Gundersen and the Final Individual Gundersen are on schedule and as German superstar Eric Frenzel clinched his fourth consecutive overall World Cup win last weekend in Val di Fiemme, the German home crowd will get to cheer on the big champion in person.
But also local hero Fabian Rießle has an agenda: after a successful season with his first two individual victories, he would like to enter the Top 30 in his home venue: incredible but true, a feat that eluded the 25-year-old until now. In terms of the Nations Cup, things are looking good for the German home team too, they are leading ahead of Norway with 403 points. A comfortable advantage but not uncatchable as the venue in Schonach is notorious for not being the German athletes’ favourite (the last German individual victory was in 1987!) and given the fact that the Norwegian team made up over 200 points on the Germans in the last three events in Val di Fiemme.
But also around the sports events, the athletes will have a busy schedule and be able to greet the public at more than just one occasion. On Friday, the best athletes will be presented at Schonach’s Kurpark, on Saturday, there will be an official Prize Giving Ceremony in the evening at the Haus des Gastes and on Sunday, the first-ever Nordic Combined Awards will be handed out at the same location.
The 50th anniversary of the Schwarzwaldpokal also draws many of the past winners of the event into town. Expected are the winner of the first edition in 1967, Edi Lengg, Hubert Schwarz, the last German to win in Schonach, legends Uli Wehling, Uwe Dotzauer, Klaus Sulzenbacher and Hannu Manninen as well as Japan’s Kenji Ogiwara. A Nordic Combined weekend has rarely been fuller. After a difficult winter of 2015/16, the ultimate winter athletes are definitely going out with a bang.
