Key Coordination Group Meeting for Sierra Nevada 2017

From 9th-11th May 2016, FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard staff, representatives from FIS Marketing AG and Infront Sports & Media conducted their third Coordination Group meeting for the 2017 FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships in Sierra Nevada (SPA) which will be held from 6th-19th March 2017.

Together with FIS Council Member Eduardo Roldán, the group received detailed presentations on all key areas including sport organisation including snowmaking and grooming, transportation, accommodation, media, TV production, security, accreditation, medical and anti-doping


Launch of website and royal support

A special highlight was the launch of the official website www.sierranevada2017.es along with the social media channels and the announcement of the official hashtag #SN2017 by Maria José Rienda, Director General of Sports at the government of Andalusia, former top Alpine World Cup athlete. The website provides comprehensive information about the Championships including latest news, calendars, venue maps, volunteer registration and detailed tourist information. 

Meanwhile, it was announced that the King, His Majesty Felipe VI of Spain, will serve as Honorary President of the Organising Committee.

We are deeply honoured that His Majesty is taking such an active interest in the 2017 World Championships,” said FIS Freestyle Skiing Coordinator Joe Fitzgerald. “His commitment is a direct reflection of the level of dedication of the entire Organising Committee to put on a first-class event.”

25 medal competitions

On the mountain, the focus was on inspecting the courses and the four finish areas for the 25 medal competitions. In attendance were the course builders for slopestyle, cross and big air, Sierra Nevada 2017 Organisers, along with members of the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation.

Eduardo Valenzuela, Head of the Organising Committee, said: "The Coordination Group meeting was full of learning for us. There are a large number of details to implement between now and March 2017 but we are excited to getting everything done both on and off the slopes to provide excellent World Championships."

Furthermore, Infront Sports & Media, the international media rights holder for the event, laid out detailed plans for bringing the World Championship action to fans around the globe. Infront presently has agreements with national broadcasters in key markets in North America, Europe and Asia and is under negotiations with several others markets to extend the record levels achieved for Kreischberg 2015.
