The Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre was named as the venue for the Snowboard big air event, which has been added to the programme for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.
The IOC Executive Board approved the recommendation of the PyeongChang Olympic Organising Committee last week in Lausanne.
POCOG President Cho Yang-ho said that the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre was chosen for the competition based on a comprehensive review of factors such as budget and public accessibility.
The big air structure at the Alpensia centre will be built by partially using the audience seating section. It is expected to accommodate 9,500 spectators.
“We fully support this decision of the PyeongChang Organising Committee to use the Alpensia Ski Jumping stadium as it is right in line with the Olympic Agenda 2020 to reduce costs of hosting the Games,” said FIS President Gian Franco Kasper. “Using an existing venue to host a new medal sport shows an excellent use of resources and the stadium environment is in fact the best way to show this exciting event.”
