As is to be expected, the test event snowboard cross course for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games is at times big and imposing, at other times tricky and technical, and all throughout a true challenge for the men and ladies’ of the FIS SBX World Cup tour.  

As is to be expected, the test event snowboard cross course for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games is at times big and imposing, at other times tricky and technical, and all throughout a true challenge for the men and ladies’ of the FIS SBX World Cup tour.  

After hugely successful slopestyle competitions took to Korea’s Bokwang Pheonix Resort last weekend, this weekend it’s the cross athletes’ turn, and, judging by the course on hand to great them, both snowboard cross and ski cross athletes should expect their competitions to live up to the benchmark set by slopestyle. 

The course starts off with a steep wu-tang that sends athletes into the first medium-sized jump. After a mellow bank, a series of kickers leads into a harder, narrower left bank that’s followed by a large step-down, leading to a sweeping right bank that is likely to see lots of passing action when we get underway with heats on Friday.

After the passing bank, a quick roller and jump section finishes off the steep top half of the course and a mellower rhythmic section dominates after the halfway point, with some big banks and some tricky roller sections that should benefit the strong gliders in the field. 

Finally, over the final drag strip, a series of three big kickers gives way to a final rollers feature that has a real possibility of being a difference-maker in close heats. Then it’s across the line and, hopefully, into the arms of a World Cup podium and the competitive advantage of taking a win at the site where Olympic gold will be awarded less than two years from now.
